Frequently Asked Questions
What Type of Student Benefits from the UCA Programs?
UCA can help any student who is considering applying to a selective university or graduate school in the United States. “Selective” means that the school chooses to admit some but not all students. UCA helps students and families understand the application process, translate student strengths into admissions “language” and grading rubrics, and create effective, compelling, and genuine presentations.
How is University Consultants of America Different?
Some consultants merely identify universities based upon a student’s resume. Others only edit, or limit their work to essay preparation. A few companies provide mock interviews, but these are performed by the same consultant that works with the student, so their practice interviews are not realistic. Very few attempt to profile and analyze student strengths, and they use standardized testing, not interactive methodologies. No other consultant uses a directed, goal-oriented program like UCA’s CAM Protocol. No other consultant utilizes anything like UCA’s Guided Self-Analysis module. No other consultancy uses UCA’s unique Team Approach
Is it Really Worth Spending the Money?
The application process is overwhelming. There are a lot of pieces, and the information that you might hear or research is often incorrect, even from “experts.” University Consultants of America wants its clients to understand every step of the process, from big picture to small details. Our goal is for students to achieve amazing success while attending a university without economic hardship. Although the value of UCA’s service is difficult to quantify, it is easy for our clients to see the benefit of our work. Working with UCA usually leads to great admissions results as well as great scholarship offers that supplement family college savings.
Why Are the Essay Credits Limited in Number, and Can We Purchase Additional Essay Credits?
UCA uses an “Essay Credits” system to help students prioritize their work in a timely manner and create a filing strategy that is effective and flexible. For most students, the included essay credits are enough to cover their applications adequately. If students desire additional essay credits, those can be purchased at a reasonable cost. For a full description of the Essay Credits system, please contact us.
Does UCA Help Clients Select Universities?
Attending the right university is life-changing, but finding the right university is overwhelming. There are over 2,000 non-profit colleges and universities in the U.S. An important part of UCA’s service is helping students find universities that fit them both academically and environmentally, but ultimately our students and families must pick the universities to which they will apply. We know that it is challenging for most parents and students to identify and understand the thousands of options available, so UCA not only provides recommendations, but also shows its clients how to research universities effectively. Our Client Managers have access to UCA’s customized database of universities, a collection of options consisting primarily of universities with on-time graduation rates of 75% or more. Picking universities is an evolving task – great choices are found later in the process, as students become more sophisticated. UCA wants each student to select schools with a wide range of selectivity so that multiple great options are available after the admissions offers are collected. Our target is April of 12th Grade, which is when the final school decision is made, and our goal is to find universities where each student will soar.
Are Highly-Selective Private Universities Worth the Price?
Private universities are not limited by tax dollars and government funding. As a result, they enjoy huge monetary endowments and offer substantial financial aid and scholarship money. For approximately 75% of families, highly selective universities cost significantly less than public universities. Nevertheless, public universities can also be great values, but usually only for residents of their state or athletes who are recruited and given full scholarships to play sports. Note also that every university admissions website is required by federal law to have a financial aid calculator, a tool that can clarify the expected cost (without scholarships or grants) based upon family income.
Does UCA File Applications for its Students?
Students are responsible for all of their work and must complete and file their own applications. However, UCA provides clear guidance on how to complete the applications.
Does UCA Provide Test Preparation for the SAT and ACT?
UCA does not provide test preparation. However, we do oversee the testing process, and UCA can recommend proven test tutors for its clients.
Does UCA Guarantee Success?
No reputable consultant should guarantee results. However, many times our students achieve admission to top schools around the world. See Student Acceptances.
